What's on the Praxis 5195?

The Praxis 5195 is divided into five different content categories that are designed to test different skills and knowledge of the language. Test takers will answer questions in the categories of:

  • Interpretive Listening
  • Interpretive Reading
  • Cultural Knowledge
  • Interpersonal and Presentational Writing
  • Presentational and Interpersonal Speaking

The exam format begins with a Listening with Cultural Knowledge Practice section that is not scored and lasts for 10 minutes. Test takers will then complete Section 1. Listening with Cultural Knowledge and Section 2. Reading with Cultural Knowledge. Each of these sections takes 50 minutes. Test takers can then complete the Writing Practice section, which is not scored. This allows them to practice with the built-in toolbar for 5 minutes. Test takers will then complete Section 3: Writing in 50 minutes and Section 4: Speaking in 15 minutes.

I. Interpretive Listening

The Interpretive Listening content category includes embedded linguistic content, and is one of the largest sections of the exam. Test takers will answer about 30 selected-response questions, equating to about 26% of the total exam. Candidates will be required to listen to different selections and answer questions accordingly. These selections are played twice and once test takers move on to the next question, they cannot go back. Test takers will need to listen to Spanish being spoken, understand the content of what is spoken, and select the best answer to the question. These questions may also test candidates' understanding of the culture. Test takers can take notes on the provided scratch paper.

II. Interpretive Reading

The Interpretive Reading section is tied for the largest section at about 26% of the exam with around 30 selected-response questions. Test takers will answer questions with embedded linguistic content. The reading section will provide students with passages from newspapers, literature, and other sources. Test takers will need to read the passage, comprehend the content, and then answer questions about the selection to demonstrate their understanding of what they read. Some questions may include visuals that may ask questions pertaining to cultural knowledge. Test takers are allowed to take notes during this section of the exam.

III. Cultural Knowledge

The Cultural Knowledge content area makes up about 12% of the exam with 15 selected-response questions. This content category is tested in Section 1: Listening and Section 2: Reading. Therefore, test takers will have to listen to and read different selections and then may be asked various cultural questions. Questions that test cultural knowledge are focused on candidates' understanding of perspectives, practices, and products of the culture. Perspectives look at ideas and values of the culture. Practices examine greetings, behavior, and other ways culture influences society. The products examine art, music, and other factors the culture has influenced. Test takers will also need to recognize cultural texts and interpret the cultural perspectives found within them.

IV. Interpersonal and Presentational Writing

The Interpersonal and Presentational Writing content area includes three constructed-response questions and makes up approximately 18%. These constructed-response questions are written out. This section includes three subcategories requiring test-takers to type their responses in Spanish using the provided character toolbar. The exam will test candidates on their interpersonal and presentational writing skills. The interpersonal writing section will test candidates' ability to respond to a letter, email, or another similar piece.

The presentational writing section is tested in two parts. Test-takers will need to write a position or opinion essay in the first subcategory. The second subcategory in presentational writing will test candidates' integrated skills by having them write a response based on a reading passage.

V. Presentational and Interpersonal Speaking

The Presentational and Interpersonal Speaking content category makes up about 18% of the exam with three constructed-response questions. However, these constructed-response answers are spoken. Test takers will be required to complete three different tasks by recording themselves speaking Spanish. The first task has test-takers read a passage and then form a response to a prompt. Test takers have 2 minutes to prepare and 2 minutes to record their answer. The second task has candidates give their opinion on a topic. They again have 2 minutes to prepare and 2 minutes to record. Finally, test-takers will need to complete a simulated conversation. Test takers get 5 turns at 25 seconds each.
